Building a Region of Talent:: www.kix.com
Building a Region of Talent: An online community known as the Kentucky-Indiana Exchange, or kix.com.
Imagine a region-wide web portal that changes the way we seek opportunity in Hardin County and throughout Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana --- a portal that helps link job seekers to employment opportunities, employers to the region’s best talent, prospective students to the training and education they need and connects our region in an unprecedented way using state-of-the-art social networking tools.
That portal is kix.com – the Kentucky Indiana eXchange.
Hardin County employers have played a pivotal role in helping make this portal a reality, participating in a regional survey that assessed the needs of area employers across a 26-County region. The results of the survey will serve as the foundation of the portal, one that is a true reflection of the employer needs now and in the future.
To make kix.com work for all of us, it needs to be a reflection of all the great things this region offers. The kix.com team wants to highlight successful – and perhaps unsung – programs, people, and businesses in Hardin County and throughout the entire region. Help us do that. Send your story ideas to kix@wired65.org and most importantly, join the kix.com community.
Visit www.kix.com and create your account today.

Governor Beshear Launches Small Business License Plate Design Competition (Now through November 10th)
Gov. Steve Beshear announced on August 13th an initiative to help raise awareness of the impact of small businesses in Kentucky, launching a design competition for a specialty small business license plate. The competition, which begins today and runs through Wednesday, Nov.10, 2010, is open to any small Kentucky-based business with 50 or fewer employees, at least one of which must be a Kentucky resident.
Kentucky residents not affiliated with a small business can also participate by partnering with a small business willing to sponsor their submission. There is no fee to submit a design, but the design must be submitted by a qualifying small business.
“More than 90 percent of the employer firms in Kentucky have 50 or fewer employees,” said Gov. Beshear. “These small businesses are responsible for thousands of jobs that form the backbone of our economy. A small business-themed license plate is a unique way to recognize the important contributions made by all kinds of small businesses throughout our Commonwealth.”
Submitted designs will be reviewed and narrowed to a group of three to five finalists by a joint committee of Kentucky small business owners and advocates. The winning design will be selected by the Kentucky Commission on Small Business Advocacy and submitted to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for final approval. A complete outline of competition rules and guidelines is available at www.peakky.org/licenseplate.aspx.
“We are excited about this opportunity for a creative individual or small business to help remind us that small business is big business in Kentucky,” said Cathy Zion, acting chair of the Kentucky Small Business Advocacy Commission and owner of Zion Publications LLC, a small business in Louisville. “Not everyone is aware of the huge economic impact of small businesses in Kentucky. Creating a small business license plate will help all of us focus on the fact that small business ‘drives’ our economic engine.”
License plate designs must be received no later than Nov. 10, 2010 via CD and mailed to: Commission on Small Business Advocacy, Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, 23rd Floor, Capital Plaza Tower, 500 Mero Street, Frankfort, Ky., 40601, Attn: Small Business License Plate Design Competition.
Upon completion of the design competition, the commission will join with Partners for Entrepreneurial Advancement in Kentucky (PEAK), a private nonprofit organization focused on small and micro-business development in Kentucky, to collect the 900 applications that must be submitted to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet before license plate production can begin. The proceeds collected from those purchasing a small business specialty license plate will be used to fund small business and entrepreneur development programs in Kentucky.
The Commission on Small Business Advocacy is an independent state commission attached to the Cabinet for Economic Development. The commission acts as an advocate for small business and works to raise the visibility of small business statewide. More information about the Commission is available at www.kysba.com.
